Worked Example
The ECB reference rate for GBP/EUR is 1.1720. You want to send 2,000 GBP to a friend in Spain. At the ECB rate that is 2,344 EUR. If your bank offers a rate of 1.1430 you receive only 2,286 EUR — a difference of 58 EUR. If a money transfer service offers 1.1680 you receive 2,336 EUR saving 50 EUR compared to your bank. Knowing the benchmark rate lets you make an informed comparison.

Why are the rates different from my bank?
Banks add a margin of 1-4% on top of the mid-market rate. Our rates are the ECB reference rates useful to benchmark whether your bank rate is competitive.
How often are rates updated?
ECB reference rates are published on business days around 16:00 CET. The converter fetches the latest rate each time you load the page.

Can I use this to calculate how much to send abroad?
Yes — enter the amount you want to send and select the source and destination currencies. The result shows the mid-market equivalent. For actual transfers your bank or transfer service will apply their own rate and fees. Use our rate as a benchmark to compare providers before you transfer.
Is this suitable for business invoicing or accounting?
The ECB reference rates are widely accepted for business accounting purposes in Europe and are used in VAT return calculations and statutory reporting. For actual payment transactions always use the rate confirmed by your bank or payment processor on the day of the transaction as rates fluctuate throughout the day.
