About This Calculator

Understanding VAT and Sales Tax

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied at each stage of production and collected by businesses on behalf of governments. Sales Tax, used in the US, is applied only at the point of sale. Both are ultimately paid by the end consumer — this calculator handles both.

Adding VAT

Use this when you have a net price and need to find the gross (VAT-inclusive) price to charge customers or check an invoice.

Removing VAT

Use this when you have a gross price and need to extract the net amount and VAT component — common for expense claims and accounting.

Global Rates

Pre-filled standard rates for 30+ countries. Rates are the standard rate only — reduced rates apply for certain goods in many countries.

Worked Example

A UK business buys software from a German supplier for 5,000 net. German VAT at 19% adds 950 making the gross invoice 5,950. As a VAT-registered business the UK company reclaims the VAT. A consumer buying the same software pays the full 5,950 and cannot reclaim. To find the net amount from a gross price: 5,950 divided by 1.19 equals 5,000 net and 950 VAT.

Common Questions

What is the difference between VAT and Sales Tax?

VAT is collected at every stage of the supply chain (production, distribution, retail) with each business reclaiming the VAT paid on its inputs. Sales Tax is only applied at the final point of sale to the consumer. The end cost to the consumer is similar but the collection mechanism is different.

Why does the US have different rates by state?

The US has no federal sales tax — each state sets its own rate, and many counties and cities add additional local rates on top. This means the actual rate you pay depends on your precise location. Some states (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska) have no sales tax at all. Check current US state rates →

Are the rates shown always correct?

The pre-filled rates are standard rates as of 2025 and are updated periodically. However VAT rates do change — always verify the current rate with your local tax authority or accountant before filing returns or issuing invoices.

What about reduced VAT rates?

Most countries apply reduced rates to certain goods such as food, books, medicines and children's clothing. For example the UK has a 0% rate on most food and a 5% rate on energy. The calculator shows the standard rate by default — you can manually enter any reduced rate you need.

Can I use this calculator for VAT returns and invoicing?

Yes — our calculator gives you mathematically correct VAT amounts for standard rate transactions. However VAT regulations vary significantly by country, transaction type and business circumstances. For formal tax filings, cross-border transactions and complex VAT situations always consult a qualified tax professional.
